So You Think You Can Dance

Last night's finale of the television show So You Think You Can Dance featured some of team member TomBanwell's leatherwork. America's best dance team Quest Crew performed a steampunk themed dance routine. Hok wore a violet Bemused half mask, Lydia wore a Victoriana mask, and Ryan wore both a funky top hat and a steampunk respirator. I don't know how he managed to keep that hat on!

The SteamTeam 'Steamy Wonderland' Contest Entries

We occasionally have internal team contests, and now and again we open voting to the public. This is one of those times!
Our team contest themes are chosen by the winner of the previous contest. Our last contest was Seam & Steam, a combination of metal and cloth. MadArtJewelry was our last contest winner, with her Sweet Absinthe Oblivion Steampunk Necklace, so she decided on the theme for this one... to quote her idea-

Since there's a lot of interest in Alice in Wonderland just now, I think the next contest should be something like "Steampunk in Wonderland" or "Alice in Steampunkland". This should provide a contest that any maker can participate in since there would be no materials specified. Criteria could be based on how well the 2 are interwoven.
And that's just what we did! We gave our members 6 weeks to come up with something awesome combining the curiosity of Alice in Wonderland with the innovation of SteamPunk. We had 11 members enter finished items on time, and we're asking YOU the public to vote on our winner.
Because we like to share, the SteamTeam also decided to do a giveaway along with the voting for our current contest! For more information about the Giveaway, please scroll to the bottom of the post!Vote Now!

Now for the Entries!

We are so proud that our very own Winona Cookie is set to be included in the upcoming collection, Steampunk 2: Steampunk Reloaded.

Here are some excerpts from Tachyon Publications blog release:

(working cover)
"Jeff and Ann VanderMeer have announced the line-up for Steampunk Reloaded. With a zeppelin-load of original fiction, nonfiction, and art, this companion to our bestseller Steampunk will be a must-have for all Steampunk fans.

Edited by Ann & Jeff VanderMeer
Interior design by John Coulthart, the genius behind The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases, et al.

This lavishly illustrated anthology edited by Ann & Jeff VanderMeer builds on the strengths of the World Fantasy Award nominated first volume, presenting 155,000 words of rich and varied Steampunk stories, nonfiction, and art that plays off the idea of Steampunk not just in the context of dirigibles and other antiquated technology but also as connected to the maker movement and other aspects of the Steampunk subculture that have begun to infiltrate the literature. It includes the William Gibson story that inspired the Steampunk offshoot of "Raygun Gothic."

The book contains both Winona Cookie original art as well as her stories, "The Unlikely Career of Portia Dreadnought," "Artemesia's Absinthe," and "Obadiah Theremin, MD"

Congratulations to an amazingly talented member of the SteamTeam. Complete table of contents can be found on Jeff VanderMeer's site here.

Our fabulously talented Steam Team member Myke Amend of Ettadiem on etsy has created the cover art for the new Cherie Priest novella. The cover was released on Subterranean Press. Here's the text from the release:

Clementine cover1 rough.jpg

"Here’s a very rough look at the cover to Cherie Priest’s long (50k word) novella Clementine, which picks up where her novel Boneshaker left off, with some different characters, and a new adventure. was first on the scene with a review, and it glows: “Boneshaker introduced readers to Priest’s steampunk America, a late 18th-century setting where the Civil War drags on and the path of technology runs a bit differently than it did in our own history books. But, while the first book focused on strange yellow gases and the science-spawned zombies that roam within the walled city of Seattle, Clementine takes us on a wild chase across the sky in hydrogen-powered airships…She throws cliches, formulaic writing and caution to the wind as her airships scream through the sky. From zombies to sky pirates — I can hardly wait to see where she takes us next.”

SteamCon II

Greetings chrononaughts, aviators, tinkerers, scientists and steampunk enthusiasts! We at Steamcon Central are toiling tirelessly to bring you an even more spectacular convention than our first quite successful Steamcon last October. This year’s steamposium will highlight the Weird Weird West or American steampunk, if you will. Imagine the age of steam on the wild frontier. You are invited to explore with us the world of roughriders on mechanical horses, mad inventors, mystical Indian shamans, and mighty steam locomotives. Picture airships instead of stagecoaches, and the precision of robotic sharp shooters. If western steampunk doesn’t appeal, there will still be lots of classic steampunk to partake of as well. We’ve doubled our space to bring you even more steampunk wonders and delights. The ever popular Mr. Bodewell’s Cabaret will return with expanded hours. Join us for Riverboat Gambler Night, tea parties, concerts and much much more.

Seattle Washington
November 19-21, 2010
Seattle Airport Marriott and the Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel.

Author Guest of Honor: James Blaylock, author of “Homunculus” and considered one of the fathers of steampunk

Artist Guest of Honor: Jake Von Slatt, esteemed maker and exceptionally dapper fellow

Gaming Guest of Honor: Shane Lacy Hensley, creator of “Deadlands”, the popular Weird Western RPG

Much more adventure is in the works. We shall elucidate further as we are able.

Vendor applications will be accepted beginning May 1st

Though the SteamTeam is not strictly affiliated with SteamCon we will likely have many members in attendance and vending.
